Obituary For Rita Braxton
Rita Gail Braxton was born February 28, 1955 in Beaumont, TX to Lenon Elmo Braxton, Sr. and the late Etta Marie Thomas Braxton. She was preceded in death by ex-husband Donald Henry Barnett, her daughter Jeana Marie Barnett, her granddaughter Trinity Nicole Smith, and two brothers Prentist Wayne Braxton and Michael Wayne Braxton.
She departed this life on Wednesday, June 1st, 2022 after a lengthy illness.
At an early age, she attended and graduated from French High School, the class of 1973. While attending, she was the 1st runner up for the 1972 FHS Homecoming Court. She was also crowned Miss Zeta Phi Beta Junior Cotillion. She attended Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. L. Isaac Lott and Pastor Rev. Oveal Walker, III. She actively served in the Women’s Ministry and the Usher Board for many years. She was always devoted to visiting and comforting the sick and shut-in through the Outreach ministry and helped those in need through the Homeless ministry. She then moved to the Dallas/Fort Worth area where she joined the Potter’s House under the leadership of Bishop T.D. Jakes.
She married the late Donald Henry Barnett August 4th, 1978 in Anacoco, LA. Their marriage ended in 1996. To this union 4 children were born, one preceded her in death.
Rita attended and graduated from Lamar University in 2001, receiving her Bachelor of Science degree in General Studies with a discipline in Counseling in Criminology, Kinesiology, and Sociology. She worked as the Secretary for Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church for over 15 years and was the office administrator for Trinity Valley District Association. She was a bus driver for Beaumont I.S.D., and a substitute teacher for elementary and junior high schools for DeSoto I.S.D. She also worked with Allied Barton Security as a console security guard until she entered retirement.
She leaves to cherish precious memories, her daughters, Gretchen Barnett, Nicole Smith (Leon) and Melody Barnett; 4 brothers, Ronald Charles Braxton, Sr., Lenon Elmo Braxton, Jr., Donald Ray Braxton (Lisa), and Gary Braxton; 2 sisters Carla Braxton and Pamela Lee (Lonnie); 2 grandchildren Leon Jeremiah Smith and Noel Malachi Smith, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and many friends.
Rita was a loving mother, grandmother, aunt, sister and friend. She was a true inspiration in her walk with God, as she loved reading her Bible, singing and meditating on the Word, and testifying of God’s goodness. She always reminded those around her, “there’s a King (or Queen) in you”.
