Barbara Jean Hall Smith
Barbara Jean Hall Smith was born to Georgia and John Hall on December 23,1934. She grew up in the renowned Fifth Ward. Barbara was Baptized at an early age at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in the Third Ward. She graduated from Phyllis Wheatley High School. Barbara attended Prairie View A&M University and transferred to Texas Southern University where she received her Bachelor of Education, and later her Master of Education. While attending TSU, she became a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. She started her teaching career in Dickinson ISD. Houston Independent School District is where Barbara spent most of her career. She taught for 34 years and retired as Counselor for HISD.
Barbara married Willie (Bill) Eugene Smith in 1956. The two were blessed by the love of their two children Edward F. and Chantay J. Smith. They worshiped together at Morning Star MBC before moving their membership to Mt. Horeb MBC where Barbara was a member of the Willing Workers, Helping Hands Ministry, Mission I, Christian Education Department and the Mother’s Board.
Barbara is preceded in death by her father, John Hall; her mother and stepfather, Georgia and Gene Kenney (whom Barbara reminisced, loved her immensely and would do anything for her and her mom); husband, Willie (whose love and commitment was only broken by death); son, Edward F; and daughter, Chantay. She is survived by grandchildren Cedric Smith (Veronica), Jacynth Smith; great granddaughter, Jacyntria; brothers-in-law Jake C. Smith (Mattie), Pastor Samuel H. Smith, Sr. (Silver-more like a sister); sister-in-law Laura Smith; goddaughters Tameka McBride, Loreal Spooner, and a special goddaughter, Jenni Smith; her caregivers who are also nieces and nephews, Chris Booker, Samuel Smith II, Etta Smith, Zolton Smith, Gladys Moton, and Samantha Goudeau; two dear friends, Maudel Simon and Gloria Jones; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Barbara will truly be missed.
